European Food Safety Authority Completes First EU-wide Assessment Of Vitamin And Mineral Sources Used In Food Supplements

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has completed the first comprehensive assessment of substances used as sources of vitamins and minerals in food supplements which are currently sold in the European Union. EFSA has examined 533 applications since 2005, relating to 344 different substances.

However, whether in the long term this can also reduce the risk of late complications in people with sustained high blood pressure, otherwise known as essential hypertension, and whether in the long term their anti-hypertensive medication can be reduced remains unresolved.

Consumers appear willing to pay higher prices for organic foods based on their perceived health and nutrition benefits, and the global organic food market was estimated in 2007 to be worth £29 billion (£2 billion in the UK alone).

Corner shops nationwide will get help from Change4Life to sell fruit and veg – this will mean more people will get their 5 a day and shops will see an increase in profits, Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham said today. Following a successful pilot in the north east, corner shops across the country can now join Change4Life and work with the local NHS to promote healthier eating in their communities.

Diets High In Calcium And Dairy Products In Childhood May Lower Mortality

New evidence suggests that children who have a diet high in calcium and who consume dairy products may have a lower mortality rate compared with those who do not, according to research published ahead of print in the journal Heart. A 65-year follow up of a study into the eating habits of families carried out in the 1930s found that dairy products and a diet high in calcium made a difference to how long people lived.
