There are four major classes of biomolecules – carbohydrates, proteins, nucleotides, and lipids. Carbohydrates, or saccharides, are the most abundant of the four. Carbohydrates have several roles in living organisms, including energy transportation, as well as being structural components of plants and arthropods. Carbohydrate derivates are actively involved in fertilization, immune systems, the development of disease, blood clotting and development.

Research has shown that swimming aids asthma symptoms in children. The activity has been proven to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for children and adolescents, according to a study in Respirology published by Wiley-Blackwell. Researchers divided children between the ages of seven to twelve into two groups. One group underwent a six-week swimming program in addition to their regular asthma treatments.

A new study from the University of Missouri may shed light on how to increase the level and quality of activity in the elderly. In the study, published in this week’s edition of Public Library of Science – ONE, MU researchers found that gene therapy with a proven “longevity” gene energized mice during exercise, and might be applicable to humans in the future. “Aging is one of the biggest challenges to a modern society.

Ever wonder what food companies put in their chicken nuggets? A quick browse through the ingredient list reveals some mysterious descriptions, such as mechanically separated chicken meat, as well as trans fat sources such as vegetable oil shortening and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. In addition, many of the products are loaded with salt and come pre-fried, bumping up the sodium and fat content unnecessarily. We set out to make our own chicken nuggets from scratch and compared them to a store-bought frozen variety. Here is what we found. Click to read now.

“An apple a day…” Not all medical problems require a state-of-the-art solution, and it would be nice to think that products from the corner shop could treat a widespread and uncomfortable ailment. Cranberry juice and related products have been touted as a simple solution for urinary tract infections, but Raul Raz, a member of F1000 Medicine, finds little to support this claim.

By now, most Americans have heard the message to limit red meat in their diets and eat more fish for better health. According to Karen Collins, MS, RD, nutrition advisor to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), “Fish is a great choice because it is naturally low in saturated fat. Some fish are also high in omega 3 fats, which are heart-healthy and help reduce inflammation throughout the body.” Chronic inflammation has been linked to increased cancer risk.

A non-toxic and environmentally friendly way to make tiny nanorods of zinc oxide has been developed for the first time by researchers in Saudi Arabia. The approach, described in the current issue of the International Journal of Nanoparticles, could allow the nanorods to be used safely in medical and for other applications. Zinc oxide has many uses when fabricated as nanoparticles and nanorods, just 100 nanometers in diameter.
